• 2008-Oct-10 - PvE player tries PvP and likes it
| I'm going to be up front with you: the original intent of this post was that PvE play in Guild Wars is where it's at and how I don't like PvP. My PvP experience in just about every MMO have been one steaming pile of suck to another. From the the lagaliscious enforced PvP of Risk Your Life, to the grind until 30 and then pvp of RF Online. through the almost, but not quite what I was looking for of Dark Age of Camelot, my PvP experiences were just not fun. I'm willing to write a lot of this off to my personality. I just don't have the competitive streak I feel is required for PvP. Even when I play boardgames with my friends every Friday night, as long as the game was fun I'm ambivalent about whether I won or lost. Now, I'm not saying every PvPer is the type to dance on other player's corpses, but I think an above-average level of competition is required. The other big deterrent has been ganking. In a momentary lapse of sanity, knowing my general feelings toward PvP, I rolled on a PvP WoW server. The fun lasted until level 17 when I was minding my own business running quests and some higher level decided to teach me the harsh realities of PvP by ganking my sorry ass. It's then I remembered why 'm not a big fan of PvP. My Guild Wars PvP experience has been minimal. I'd usually roll a PvP character since I wasn't level 20 yet and give it a go. While I can't say I had a horrid experience, because I just rolled a pre-built I felt like I was playing in someone else's skin. However, recently I did manage to get a character to level 20. Since before I praised the PvE game over the PvP game, I figured I should at least refresh my memory on it. So, I logged in, hopped over the Random Areas -- the PvP area I figured to the best for n00bie me -- and promptly watched the time fly by as I had fun. I'm sure it helped we won our first match, but after we lost the second one I promptly hit ""enter battle"" to go at it again. Playing with a character I knew the quirks of made all the difference in the world. It's turning out that Guild Wars' PvP may be exactly the type I'm looking for: Totally consensual and quick. No long, drawn out battles waiting for the enemy to show up, or simply zerging the other side. Most importantly, no ganking! The small team-based combat reminds me of quick games of Capture the Flag or general team-based deathmatch games when I played Quake. People were largely quiet and didn't tell me how much my play style sucked. cheap wow gold I can see where it may not appeal to a DAoC or WoW player, but for an infrequent pvper like myself, it turned out to be quite fantastic. I'm not sure how much it'll draw me away from PvE, but it'll certainly fill the ""I only have an hour to play"" void. What have your experiences been with Guild Wars' PvP. mp3 players Do you prefer it over ""standard"" MMO PvP. " Rather than labeling Guild Wars an MMORPG, we prefer to call it a CORPG (Competitive Online Role-Playing Game). Guild Wars was designed from the ground up to create the best possible competitive role-playing experience. world of warcraft gold Success in Guild Wars is always the result of player skill, not time spent playing or the size of one's guild. As characters progress, they acquire a diverse set of skills and items, enabling them to use new strategies in combat. Players can do battle in open arenas or compete in guild-vs-guild warfare or the international tournament. wow gold Engaging in combat is always the player's choice, however; there is no player-killing in cooperative areas of the world. Finally, unlike existing MMOs, all characters in Guild Wars inhabit the same virtual world -- they are not divided onto different servers or shards -- so players can always team up with or compete against any other player in the world. Can my character be killed by other players. wow gold While Guild Wars has player vs. player combat, you are in control. You can choose to join in competitive missions and receive acclaim for winning against other gamers, or you can reap the rewards of solo adventures or cooperative team missions with an entirely different set of challenges. wow gold kaufen Will the game have guild support. Will there be ladders and tournaments. Guild Wars, as evidenced by its name, will have broad support for game guilds, including integrated support for worldwide tournaments and ladders, the ability for a guild to own and operate a guildhall, private guild forums, and more. |

• 2008-Oct-10 - Guild Wars: PvE or PvP, which is it?
| Forgive my asking, but I was under the assumption (my mistake) that GW was basically a pve game with a pvp aspect within the game. You start in a tutorial area to learn techniques and experience play (Pre Searing) then furthur the adventure into the whole world area (Post Searing). I have tried to play in post but found it to be essentially only a primer for the almighty pvp. I am desperately trying to give the game a fair shake. There are things I could rant, complain, and about for days, even weeks, but I am just trying to get a grasp of which game we are playing. If this game is just about the PvP arena fights, sorry I don't need it. Counterstrike, Unreal, ect. already have that and I choose not to play. (Proving my dial-up is slower and laggy isn't that hard to accomplish. ) I bought the game out of a sense of adventure and losing myself to a world of fantasy and graphic illusion. Again, I thought the game was about PvE. Not a tutorial for PvP I have nothing against PvP. Great way to relieve stress fragging others, I'm all for that. I played (and still play) Diablo 2 LOD and love the story and quest etc. , but the PvP aspect is just a part of that game not the major focus. In Guild Wars, it seems the only focus is to get to the PvP arena. Each quest and mission pushing you further toward the supposed goal of PvP. Take it or leave it my question remains; Is Guild Wars primarily PvE or PvP. If it is PvP, don't mislead the buyer just state it is a PvP on the box and in the promotional stuff. If it is PvE then try to develop a litte leeway for users not to be plowed into the PvP aspect. I can't explore and adventure along the way if I have to do certian exact (PvP leading) quest and missions to further the game. I hope the developers address this issue somewhere along the way in patches and expansions. I cannot see a future for the game if PvP is all there is to it. The game is actually pretty well balanced betwen the two sides. PvP players view the PvE content, which by the way is probably 90% or better of the total, as nothing more than a trainer/filler/annoyance to PvP. On the otherhand PvE players find the RP side of things rather immersive and feel like PvP is a side game to what THEY prefer doing. THe game missions are constructed fairly linearly, but are for the most part bypassable if you don't want to do them. There are a few that you HAVE to do to progress, but not many. The entire range of EA's are available for playing in with a lot of room for good old fashion exploration. Unless there is a drastic change, the expansions and add-on areas will primarily be RP in nature, with new bosses and things. Other than the new bosses in those areas, they are not something that PvP folks will likely need to play unless they have quests for some of the skill acquisition that those folks see as a desperate need. All in all though the game is set to work well for all players, but you will find that there are some folks in either camp that will never be happy with the game unless ANet ditches their entire development plan and caters strictly to those folks that complain the most. " and even another, which is ehhh since you might get an occasional rare is go to droknars, as soon as you go out the south gate, youll notice a grawl, or 2, running, these grawl will not attack you if you knawed on their ankles, so follow them, they go through this small canyon, then there are groups of grawl, ignore them, follow that path east, hold ALT down so you dont miss it, theres a chest towards the dead end/before that path turns south, open it up, 3 or 4 items worth 30, 40, 50g each, and an occasional rare, do it as many times needed Hurin66 Its not that hard really, even if you never farm by the time you beat the game you should have at least 50k+ probably. If you account for the fact that major runes sell for about 2-4k and superior for about 10-15k. Also good weapons sell pretty high as well, last time I sold one I think I got like 5k for a 15-22 dragon sword. buy wow gold Farming for Gold drops or garments to salvage is all possible. Sigils :p. Not really, considering that you need a team of 8 most likely all guild members to have a good chance in HoH, that means profits split about 50k/8. mp3 players So even if you get multiple runs straight the time spent you probably would have made more gold farming. The probability of holding HoH so long that all 8 players farming alone for that same amount of time would make less then the sigil gold is very low. Then again tombs is fun vs farming which is not i suppose :winking47 September Timeside If there's any reason not to have 20k it's because people are spending hours trying to sell some crappy 14-26 bow they got for 200g or so. world of warcraft gold Dealing with other players sucks. Period. I've sold purple items just because I would rather take 68g from a vendor than wait and argue with someone for thirty minutes to get 500 or so. wow gold I've salvaged everything I've got since I started, and I had my first platinum before I left pre-searing. And I don't even sell the stuff I salvage. I save it for myself. wow gold Pretty much I just sell rares or collectors items (collectors items quest goodies suck). Next rule of thumb is don't waste your money. Don't upgrade your armor if you don't have to, don't constantly be buying weapons just because they give 1 or 2 points more damage than the one you have (I was at Draknar's forge still wearing my LA armor). wow gold kaufen Also, whatever you do, don't buy black dye. Once you're opulent and running fissure of woe runs all the time go for it. But if you feel like you need gold, for god's sake, no dye! bad! no! |

• 2008-Oct-10 - Ideal for Farming(when you need that gold)
| Monk / Mesmer 12(+2)Smiting 8Inspiration 10(+2)Healing Bathlazars Aura Smite Hex Symbol of Wrath Shield of Judgement Banish Channeling Mending Purge Conditions Perfect for farming undead heavy missions. Holy damage does 200% to undead. D'alessio Seaboard is perfect for this build, and can be farmed quite quickly. All of these skills can be purchased in towns as well, so this character is relatively easy to create. To use this character you simply keep mending on you at all times, run up to minions to be melee, then start casting channeling, then either symbol of wrath, Shield of Judgement or bathlazars aura. Followed by banish. Purge Conditions and Smite hex are situational and very effective. The trick to running d'alessio seaboard effectively is use the farmers and white mantle as beacons. It is ideal to cast either shield of judgement or bathlazars aura on them and sit and watch the undead minions and zombies die. You could even go as far as casting mending on them to keep them alive through the beating. I am able to run the mission in 10minutes (I stop after I kill the last boss in defending the abbot), and usually get 4yellow drops, some salvagables sometimes 1blue(from a lucky barrel) and a dye or two. whiskas I wonder if they fixed riverside. Healing hands and mending was enough to keep my warrior alive while i was leading my army of undead. And riverside gives out alot better items than the seaboard. Luckily this time I'm giving a friend a friends pass under the condition he comes with me farming to riverside for the some purpose of being my mule. nicosharp riverside is really the best to farm, but is more time consuming and there is more strategy involved. For those players that are still learning the ins and outs of the game, or dont want to think as hard, this is a very easy way to get drops you can use. You can pull off this same combo on Riverside with healinghands and retribution along with mending and channeling, and AOE FireMarshal There really are many ways for farming. The best way to farm though is to find a good build that is suitable for farming for gold, as well as farming higher level(Riverside Zealots). Frostty1 FluffyFarming is when you kill monsters over and over and over to get gold, materials, dyes, and hopefully some rare or unique items. The idea with farming is to balance the amount of time it takes for you to kill monsters with the amount of goodies you can get from them. You don’t want to spend a lot of time killing monsters and then have the monsters drop very little. Just like you ‘farm’ land to get crops… you ‘farm’ monsters to get items and gold. " You CAN run away from mobs, in most circumstances (this doesn't always seem to be the case, but heck you might as well try when you can). mp3 players Most of them well give up on chasing you after a short distance. I don't recommend doing this as a habit in post-searing, where mobs crawl up out of the ground and ambush you as you run by. There are no death penalties in pre-searing Ascalon (hurrah!) but don't get too cocky since you start getting them in the post-searing world. world of warcraft gold Item colors are in this order from least to greatest rarity: white, blue, purple, gold. You probably won't see any purple or gold items in pre-searing Ascalon. I recommend keeping an identification kit and a salvaging kit in your inventory once you can afford them. wow However I don't recommend salvaging items unless they say they are "highly salvageable," or unless absolutely necessary to clear out your inventory. Get the belt pouch as soon as possible, via collecting the appropriate item (skale fins or worn belts). This will give you 5 extra slots of inventory space. wow gold You'll notice there are 2 bag slots in your inventory screen - but you won't be able to purchase them until the post-searing stage. Quest Hints This is not a walkthrough by any means - we won't be going over every single quest in pre-searing, mostly because the quests are not that difficult to figure out! However here are some tips for a few quests: Gwen She's just a little girl looking for a new hero to admire. I don't think anyone has figured out her full purpose, but you can give her the following items (in this order): Gwen's broken flute (found by the river skale isle across the river just SE) - She'll ask you for this one initially. wow gold Flute (available at any merchant) Small Girl's Cape (available at any merchant) 5 Red Iris Flowers (ground spawn) After all that she gives you a Tapestry Shred - that's the last step I know about. If you have her follow you, she will heal you every now and then for 20 HP. I don't know what you do with the shred though. wow gold kaufen I've found Gwen's broken flute again in post-searing, and no clue what to do with it. Perhaps we will see her again later on. I'll update this guide if I find out anything! |

• 2008-Oct-10 - Guild Wars Strategy and Balance
| If Guild Wars reminds you a bit of Blizzard's classic Diablo action role-playing games, that's probably because developer ArenaNet was founded by Blizzard veterans. While Guild Wars isn't a massively multiplayer, persistent-world game like EverQuest, the goal in the game is to explore a vast, virtual world while battling both computer-controlled enemies and other players. However, Guild Wars will require you to do a lot more than just rapidly click on the mouse button to hack and slash your opponents. The game also incorporates a vast and intricate skill-based system reminiscent of the card game Magic: The Gathering. Each character can have dozens, if not hundreds, of skills in his or her inventory, but prior to each adventure, you can only select a handful of those skills to bring along. We had the chance recently to ask producer Jeff Strain how the gameplay in Guild Wars will adjust to accommodate veteran and casual role-playing gamers.
He's about to deliver a splitting headache.
GameSpot: We've already had a basic introduction to the character classes in Guild Wars: the elementalist, the monk, the mesmer, the ranger, the necromancer, and the warrior. In Guild Wars, you can choose a primary and secondary class for each character. Why was the decision made to allow players a secondary class. How are all the different combinations being made into viable choices.
Jeff Strain: The dual-class system provides richness of strategy by allowing us to make the professions strongly themed, in terms of strengths and weaknesses, without locking players into a specific play style. For instance, a warrior/ranger and a warrior/elementalist are both good front-line tanks (melee fighters that can absorb a lot of damage), but each has different specialties that make for a unique gameplay experience.
The professions are equal in terms of raw power, but while some operate in a fairly straightforward manner, others are more difficult to master. For example, a warrior/ranger is going to be roughly balanced with a mesmer/necromancer, in terms of power, but it will be much easier for a novice to play the former, because the mesmer/necromancer strategies are a little more complex--a factor that appeals to veteran players.
GS: How, if at all, are skills being adjusted for smaller and larger games. Can we expect to see players switching different skills in and out of their regular rotations for a smaller two-on-two match, as opposed to a four-on-four match. How is the game being designed to accommodate larger and smaller engagements.
JS: We want skills to behave predictably, so we don't adjust them based on game size. There are 450 skills in Guild Wars, of which at least 150 will be available to each character, and the skills have to be easily learnable. Guild Wars contains enough strategic depth that there's no need to overcomplicate things by changing the way skills behave. We might tweak death penalties or resurrection, but skill behavior remains constant.
Players will, however, tend to adjust their skill sets depending on the situation. They might choose general, broad-use skills for small teams and more-specialized skills for larger teams. mp3 players For example, in a large party with several monk healers, one monk might focus on healing, while another lays down protection spells. Meanwhile, a third removes hexes and resurrects dead allies. Player strategy, rather than skill behavior, will change depending on the size of the conflict. world of warcraft gold
GS: And how is the game being adjusted to accommodate players of different skill levels and play schedules. Is Guild Wars being developed to appeal to hardcore fans who will carefully puzzle out ideal combinations of different skills to make killer characters and war parties. And how will Guild Wars be enjoyable for casual fans who don't have many hours a week to devote to trying out different skill sets. wow Will they just log in and be destroyed online by veteran players.
Bone creatures are the animated skeletons of fearsome monsters. And they look cool. wow gold
JS: In guild-versus-guild play, your guild is ranked based on past performance, and it will be matched up with guilds of a similar rank. In tournament play, due to the elimination structure, teams are also matched against teams of similar skill. Because Guild Wars is a skill-based game (that is, we reward skillful and creative play rather than hours played), players of varying levels can team up and have fun completing missions together. wow gold kaufen No matter how new you are to Guild Wars, you are never ""useless. "" Some players may be more skillful from day one, but they will tend to play against players of a similar type. We'll match casual versus casual and veteran versus veteran. wow power leveling This is one of the reasons we include casual gaming arenas. Hardcore players tend to specialize and count on their buddies to cover them, while casual players tend to want to be more self-sufficient. |

• 2008-Oct-10 - Assassin Guides
| OK, I had time to go through ten of them with hands on testing in arenas. It's only one person's opinion here, so no need to think I mean to say that any compliments or suggestions I make are the only way to see things. Note that I subbed in a Rez when absent, taking out the skill you highlighted could go. You didn't post the equipment codes, which helps a lot for those who don't know best how to do it themselves, so I made my best judgment. I did notice you said that you usually use minor runes with Health Vitae. Here are my general impressions from the first 10 after playing them for a few rounds: Assassin's Promise: Needs a heal first and foremost. That was discussed above however. Your use of AP might not be best for arenas because deaths are unpredictable. With your setup, your two Hexes have a 45s recharge, so once they are used you can't use any skills at all (except the rez) until they are ready. Of course the damage is really strong, so if you get a death then they all come back, so it's all or nothing when you go at a foe. I can see this being fine for AB though. heh maybe you can just suicide if it doesn't work as another way there to get the recharge. Assault Enchants: An interesting elite that may have limited use in arenas because only a few classes with certain build types are affected by spamming total enchant loss every 2s. Prot Monks and Dervishes are about it since everyone else practically is in trouble with weaker enchant stripping. That said, it's a noble effort to make a build with such a specialized elite (not your fault it is powerful only in rare cases). The attack damage is good, doing around 75% from the three damage skills. This keeps the build usable when there is nothing to disenchant. Guardian/Aegis isn't guaranteed to be stripped by this since your attacks may be blocked, but everything else in general use almost is. Aura of Displacement: The original popular Shadow Step before SP came along. One strike against it is that you lose an e-pip while it is up and using GPS afterwards and Twisting Fangs at the end is VERY expensive. For a spike build that's ok though if you get a kill, but vs. 60AL it doesn't kill straight (the degen catches up soon though). This is important because you can't melee spam a kiter to finish the job. what role you want to play I think if you can eek out a bit more damage for a 500 HP kill it would make it flow better. Defense is nice though, especially since you can use AoD as a way to get out of the area fast. Beguiling Haze: Hmmm, maybe I'm missing something but since BH isn't a Hex you never plant a Hex on them with it. mp3 player With no Hex BMT won't Cripple. This allows your Dazed foe to run away until it wears off. You have a powerful offensive combo though for cumulative damage. world of warcraft gold but since BH is 15E you can't cycle through it more than once. wow Dark Apostasy: Another specialty elite. it allows you to strip an enchant regularly to keep the pressure up. I really like how well you control energy here because normally that could be an issue with this elite. wow gold Malicious Strike is a great addition to ensure a key strip at the right time. The main issue I had was the unique defense. It just may not be for me but Dash and Sig of Malice is tough to survive on. wow gold Flashing Blades: It's not an elite to build around of course, but you do have an interesting build surrounding it. Shadow Refuge+Pious Restoration is a neat combo, although you lose SR's attack heal bonus when using PR. Still, great Hex stack removals are tough to come by in the game. wow gold Vow of Piety is too random for my taste. You may want another enchant for PR to strip if SR isn't the one you use it on. Still, I like the overall defensive effort. Offensively it's a combo I enjoy myself. |

• 2008-Oct-10 - Guild Wars Hints, Tips
| Name Ranger's pet Type /namepet at the chat window. Note: Make sure to put a space between the ""t"" of ""pet"" and the name of your pet. Check deaths Type /deaths at the chat window to check your deaths in the game. Checking hours of game play While playing the game at any time, you can ""broadcast"" your ""age"", which represents the hours you have played the game. Press [Enter] then type /age. You can do this in any of the voice commands (Guild, All, Team, etc. ) to let your friends find out just how long you've played. Hint: Charr Hides An easy way to get lots of Charr Hides (a valuable item that gives fur squares), and sometimes Rune, is to continually play the Ruins of Surmia mission in Ascalon. It is recommended that you are level 10 or higher or be with a party with level 10 or higher players. Make sure to have Resurrection Signet equipped, as it may be needed. Also, get both the bags and the belt pouch to hold all the items that are dropped. This is also useful for leveling up easily. Hint: Using Resurrection Signet multiple times Resurrection Signet becomes unusable after you resurrected someone, but when you defeat a Boss it becomes usable again. Hint: Making Gold Dye First, mix Orange and Silver to make Sweet 1. Then mix Sweet 1 and Yellow to make Sweet 2. Finally, mix Sweet 2 and Silver to make Gold Dye (O+S+Y+S). Hint: Making Pink Dye Mix Purple and Red (and Silver for a darker pink). This looks very nice on warriors. Hint: Easy money You can ""farm"" gold by choosing a species of enemy to hunt to collect their gold drop. In the Ascalon area, the biggest gold drop is 20 gold. Try going to Kryta and hunting the Ettins in the west end for better drops (20 to 80 gold). The best areas are in the Maguma Jungle and Crystal Desert (80 to 130 gold). These areas are very difficult for most people, and they choose to ""run"" to the next town/outpost/city instead of fighting. Instead of loosing money from it (most runners ask 500 to 4,000 gold in payment), fight your way there. You will make money and level up quickly. Hint: Gift For Althea quest: More money After you have collected either the Beautiful Feather (in middle of Lakeside Village), Beautiful Pearl (in a beautiful shell near Miller Upton's home), or Beautiful Pendant (in a chest slightly northeast of the bandit camp) and take it to him, he will decline the gift saying it is not good enough. Instead of getting the other two items to show him, you can simply talk to him about the beautiful item again. This time he will take the gift. Hint: Gift For Althea quest: Easier completion After you get either the Beautiful Feather, Pearl, or Pendant, instead of taking it to him, take it to Althea and you will get the reward. She will say something about talking with him, and if you already did the ""Mesmer's Burden"" quest and have the Devourer Egg for Old Mack, she will walk away. Hint: Easy faction points Immediately after logging into the game with a PvP character, start the ""The Team Trials"" quest. Complete all the missions until you get to the last one, ""The Killcount"". Intentionally lose this mission and you will be taken back to the beginning. Repeat this until you think you have the desired amount of faction points then complete the last match to make it to the PvP grouping lobby location. buy wow gold Talk to the Priest next to the storage people to spend your points on items and skills. Note: Killing as many people as you can in the missions will gain more faction points. Hint: Using advanced weapons and items for beginners There are storage areas (only Post-Searing) that allow you to store any item or weapon desired. cheap wow gold As most people do, start with a first character and play for awhile. You will be rewarded with lots of good weapons, runes, and items that a new player cannot get at the beginning of Post-Searing. Store the objects in your storage file in any town, city, or outpost. mp3 Then, start with a new character and get past Pre-Searing to unlock the storage areas. Go to the storage location and you will have high level weapons and items for a low level character. Note: There is a part at the beginning of the game (Pre Searing) that does not yet have storage areas; you must complete that first. wow gold Glitch: Have any weapon or shield for any class on PvP First, make a PvP. When you get to the last part of creation (name), go back to the beginning of the character creation and start over. The character that you make will have the weapon and shield of your last character. wow gold Print Submit " "I know I said I was done with Guild Wars, but something with the game finally clicked for me and I think I short-changed the game in my last post. I dinged the game because I didn’t find the search for skills to be all that interesting. I also noticed that people kept saying the game was like a collectible card game. wow gold The other day this finally clicked for me and I understood what they were talking about. I just couldn’t stop thinking of the game in the terms I was familiar with, and it was giving me some kind of idiot mental block about it. |
