The military obstacle course is used (mostly in boot camp) as a way to familiarize recruits with the kind of tactical movement they will use in combat, as well as for physical training, building teamwork, and evaluating problem solving skills. Typical courses involve obstacles the participants must climb over, crawl under, balance, hang, jump, etc. Puddles of muddy water, ropes/nets, and "no touch" restrictions are often used to make the course more difficult. They tend to be outdoors. Often, specialized courses are made to focus on specific needs, such as night movement, assault, and bayonet training. Military courses can also contain climbing walls and rappelling walls.

At the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario, officer cadets in first year participate in an obstacle course, which is designed by senior cadets. The obstacle course lasts a little over an hour, consists of thirteen obstacles built by each squadron located around the RMC grounds. Obstacles such as a 12-foot wall and truck pulling are designed to test teamwork and physical fitness of First Years. The First Year flights are judged on the time it takes to complete each obstacle. The annual obstacle course race is memorialized by a sculpture by John Boxtel, "To Overcome", which was a gift of the class of 1991. Officer Cadets in third year take a physical education courses Obstacle Course and Water Borne Training. In the Obstacle course, cadets design obstacles with the available equipment and are evaluated on their leadership and innovation in the design of an obstacle course for their classmates. In the Water Borne training, cadets learn about aquatic obstacle courses training and improve their basic swimming skills.

At the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY, Cadets must take and pass the Indoor Obstacle Course Test (IOCT). The test consists of 11 obstacles that must be navigated sequentially and is a vigorous test of total body fitness and high intensity cardio-vascular capacity. First year Cadets take the IOCT as part of mandatory gymnastics training, while Third Year Cadets must pass the IOCT as a stand-alone test of fitness.

--Inflatable
Inflatable (air filled) obstacle courses can have participants go through a variety of areas like the Bash, a tall loose structure to push or wade through, nets to crawl under, walls to climb over and holes to jump through. Some larger inflatables have even more areas. Inflatable obstacle courses are used for corporate events, youth events, sports centers and parties.

--Assault
An assault obstacle course can be done inside or outside. The outside course is usually messy and filled with mud and muddy water. An inside course is similar to an inflatable course, but it is used in physical education lessons or holiday camps, using gym equipment or whatever is at hand.

Swimming Pool Slides ¨C Quick Tips

Swimming pool slides are a very popular addition to the poolside. They are a much safer alternative to the diving board and can also be enjoyed by children and adults alike. However, like diving boards, swimming pool slides also require a minimum pool depth and size to avoid injury. Therefore, before purchasing a slide, it is best to consult a professional to determine if your pool meets these requirements.

The pool deck must also be spacious enough to accommodate the slide. Straight slides often require more than 12 feet of room in front of the pool. But curved and spiral slides are smaller and can be more fun, too.

Pool slides are typically made out of fiberglass and are coated with a special gel to enhance sliding. To improve sliding and enjoyment even further, some slides are designed to be easily connectable to a water hose that runs water through the slide and down to the pool. For an enhanced look, you may also consider a mock-stone slide that appears to be made out of rock.

Inflatable Pool Slides

Attaching a solid slide to your deck is not always a viable option. The reason may be building or neighborhood codes that prohibit it, insufficient pool size or depth, or the cost. Whatever the reason, inflatable pool slides are an option that¡¯s available for small children. You obviously won¡¯t get the same bang out of an inflatable slide, but the price and instant gratification can¡¯t be beat.

Christmas Inflatable Takes a Swim

So we have these big outdoor inflatable Christmas decorations. One is this huge carousel, about 7¡ä tall and about 8¡ä diameter. Another is a 12¡ä long and 6¡ä high thing with a Christmas tree, a polar bear, a penguin sitting on an igloo, and a snowman - this scene has lights that flicker in time to the Christmas music it plays. Another is just a short thing, about 4¡ä tall, and it is two penguins revolving around and around. And then there is the newest one, which I bought at the end of last season.

This is about 6¡ä tall and about the same around. It is a Christmas ornament with three penguins - seems to be a theme here - rotating around inside it. Very cool.

So yesterday, I put the long one and the small one in the front courtyard, as always, and then took the two big ones, the carousel and the ornament, around to the back of the house where the pool is. I set up the carousel and anchored it as usual. But then I just plugged in the ornament one to get it inflating, while I went to the store.

Now, I want to say up front, it wasn¡¯t very windy when I left, but I was gone a long time, and when I got back, I found the ornament inflatable floating in the pool. Luckily, when the wind blew it away from the wall it unplugged itself.

So I go to drag it out, and my God, you cannot believe how heavy that thing was with all that water game that had gotten into it!!! I finally managed to drag it out, no doubt suffering a hernia in the process, and then gave it artificial respiration to get most of the water out, but it still had a lot of water in it, including in the blower, which we may recall runs off of electricity, not to mention the lights that are inside it and the little motorized thingy on top which makes it turn,

Well, to make a long story longer, I dragged it out to our shed, dried the motor with compressed air, let it drain some more and risked electrocution to get it working again. Finally, 24 hours later, it is finally dry enough to operate correctly, although I suspect that the little penguins are a bit waterlogged.

Tomorrow it goes back on display, with proper tie downs!!!

BTW, I must say these inflatables are really something. I love that even with a tear or two in them; they will still fill up and work.

Also, I really love turning them on in the morning and watching them inflate. I have no life!

How to Enjoy a Safe Bouncy Castle Party

Bouncy castle parties are a great way to enjoy an occasion for all the family. Many bouncy castle hire companies offer children¡¯s castles and adult castles. The main difference is the depth of the bouncy castle bed. The bouncy castle bed depth required for an adult is considerably deeper than the one required for children.

If adults are to use a bouncy castle, the hirer must hire an appropriate castle suitable for the required ages. Most bouncy castle companies will offer free help and advice when booking.

It is important to say which age range the castle will be for. This is because for insurance reasons. When the inflatable has arrived, the castle will be erected on either a grass surface or indoor surface. Flagged or block paved surfaces are not usually adequate for placing an inflatable.

The hiring company will issue a set of guidelines for the safety aspect of running your event. These guidelines will usually list the important points for individuals bouncing on the castle, and what to do in case if failure of the equipment.

It is the responsibility of the person signing for the castle, to ensure all guidelines are adhered to, as it is the person signing for the castle who will be responsible for all the people using the castle. If an accident was to occur, a claim cannot be pursued upon the bouncy castle company, because the hirer will have signed document stating the equipment is safe and erected correctly.

Whilst a bouncy castle party is a great way of enjoying an occasion, it is a must that the safety guidelines are read and adhered to.

There are many different sizes and designs for bouncy inflatable, ranging from around 10 foot * 10 foot, to 20 foot plus. The average castle is around 12 foot * 15 foot. This is the castle size itself, which includes the inflated entrance step.

A usual hire is for around 4 hours, and the hiring company will differ with these times. If you require the castle for a longer period of time, ask for a longer hire period when booking. The hirer may not charge any extra for a longer period of hire; however, this would be at the discretion of the hirer.

A typical bouncy castle size will cater for around seven or eight children at any one time. Try to restrict children to the same height at all times.

A castle of this size will easily cater for around twenty kids, using the ¡®one on one off¡¯ method. Kids will usually tire in around five minutes and require refreshments. So supplying plenty of water or juice would be a good idea. Try to avoid summersaults and ¡®rocking¡¯ the castle for safety reasons.

Safety mats, a blower and a rain cover should be supplied at no extra cost along with an electrical extension lead with a suitable RED plug device.

When the occasion has finished, the hiring company will deflate the castle and take it away free of charge. The persons hiring the inflatable should not attempt to deflate or pack away the castle at all. A bouncy castle party should be a great experience for one and all.

Sphygmomanometer

A sphygmomanometer or blood pressure meter is a device used to measure blood pressure, comprising a cuff to restrict blood flow, and a mercury or mechanical manometer to measure the pressure. It is always used in conjunction with a means to determine at what pressure blood flow is just starting, and at what pressure it is unimpeded. Manual sphygmomanometers are used in conjunction with a stethoscope.

The word comes from the Greek sphygm¨®s (pulse), plus the scientific term manometer (pressure meter). The device was invented by Samuel Siegfried Karl Ritter von Basch. Scipione Riva-Rocci, an Italian physician, introduced a more easily used version in 1896. Harvey Cushing discovered this device in 1901 and popularized it.

A sphygmomanometer consists of an inflatable cuff, a measuring unit (the mercury manometer, or aneroid gauge), and inflatable bulb and valve, for manual instruments.

Operation
The cuff is normally placed smoothly and snugly around the right arm, at roughly the same vertical height as the heart while the subject is seated with the arm supported. It is essential that the correct size of cuff is selected for the patient. Too small a cuff results in too high a pressure, whilst too large a cuff results in too low a pressure. The cuff is inflated until the artery is completely occluded. Listening with a stethoscope to the brachial artery at the elbow, the examiner slowly releases the pressure in the cuff. As the pressure in the cuffs falls, a "whooshing" or pounding sound is heard (see Korotkoff sounds) when blood flow first starts again in the artery. The pressure at which this sound began is noted and recorded as the systolic blood pressure. The cuff pressure is further released until the sound can no longer be heard. This is recorded as the diastolic blood pressure.

Significance
By observing the mercury in the column while releasing the air pressure with a control valve, one can read the values of the blood pressure in mm Hg. The peak pressure in the arteries during the cardiac cycle is the systolic pressure, and the lowest pressure (at the resting phase of the cardiac cycle) is the diastolic pressure. A stethoscope is used in the auscultator method. Systolic pressure (first phase) is identified with the first of the continuous Korotkoff sounds. Diastolic is identified at the moment the Korotkoff sounds disappear (fifth phase).

There are three types of sphygmomanometers:

Digital sphygmomanometer is with manual or automatic inflation. These are electronic, easy sphygmomanometer to operate and practical in noisy environments. Many have not been validated for all patient groups, and can give very inaccurate readings. They measure mean arterial pressure (MAP) and use algorithms to calculate systolic and diastolic values. In this sense, they do not actually measure the blood pressure, but derive the readings. Digital oscillometric monitors are also confronted with ¡°special conditions¡± for which they are not designed to be used: arteriosclerosis, arrhythmia, preeclampsia, pulsus alternant, and pulsus paradoxes.

Digital portable finger blood pressure monitors with automatic inflation. These are more portable and easy to operate, though less accurate. They are the smallest blood pressure monitors.

Manual should be operated by a trained person. Mercury manometers are considered to be the "gold standard" of measurement because their measurement is absolute and does not require re-calibration. For this reason they are often required in clinical trials of pharmaceuticals and for clinical evaluations of determining blood pressure for high risk patients including pregnant women. Aneroid, mechanical, types are in common use, but should be calibrated against a mercury manometer. The unit of measurement of blood pressure is millimeters of mercury (mmHg). Blood pressures are usually given as an even number.

Manual sphygmomanometers require a stethoscope for auscultation.
