LETTER: Necklace and knowledge found by the CSC

Necklace During the first two weeks of July, Cool Science Club hosted students from kindergarten to middle school who explored and investigated science concepts in an exciting, engaging, and hand-on approach. Our wonderful and dedicated staff developed these activities according to the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. The young scientists explored interactive biology, chemistry, forensics, and physics concepts throughout the day.

This science experience would not have been possible without a community effort. First, I would like to thank the parents who realize the importance the role of science and technology has on everyday life for our students, and the impact it will have in their future. This parental commitment to science is integral for increasing student interest and achievement in science. Second, CSC staff was amazed at the students themselves who were an incredibly enthusiastic, curious and knowledgeable group to work with each day.

Cool Science Club also owes a sincere thank you to Alex Sarro who provided an authentic learning experience the first week. Alex generously offered students the opportunity to investigate the “actual” forensic evidence at Alessandro’s Hair Salon. Also,one of Winchester’s finest detectives, Lieutenant Pierce arrived at the crime scene to demonstrate how forensic evidence is gathered and to stress the importance of teamwork. Lieutenant Pierce returned at the end of the week to help solve the mystery of the missing diamond necklace. CSC thanks Jim for sharing his expertise in his field and dedication to his community.

CSC experience may not have occurred without the help of the Winchester Police Celebrity Softball Game and Enka Fair who generously donated scholarship money; while a local business, Lee Kimball, donated funds for science development to pay for a marine biologist, a physicist, an engineer, a forensics expert and a chemist to increase the young scientists understanding of these concepts.

We also thank Dr. Kerble whose commitment to excellence in education, and in this case, science, demonstrates his focus and support in developing our students’ understanding of science in preparation for the challenges of the 21st century. CSC is also grateful to principals, Vandy French and Kate Scanlon; and the secretarial and custodial staffs of the Lincoln and McCall who were so cooperative as our scientists were allowed to share these buildings with other youth groups.

In closing, Cool Science Club sincerely appreciates the kindness and generosity from so many in our community.
