“It's been long, hard, challenging and exciting,”senior marine curator Chris Spaulding said, standing besidetemporary pools set up under giant tents behind Legoland.

According to Spaulding, there are three principal ways to obtaindisplay fish and other marine creatures:

First and preferred method is surplus from other aquariums. Likezoos and baseball teams, aquariums regularly trade what they havetoo much of for what they want or need. Often, the deal is done fora fish to be named later.

“For example, we may get two breeding rays from anotheraquarium, with the promise that we'll give them a female in thefuture,” Spaulding said.

Second is aquaculture: Fish and other organisms purchased fromcommercial enterprises that raise them for sale. Sea horses, coraland small tropical fish are often obtained this way.
