Pipe bombs found during traffic stop

GAYLORD, Mich. - An 18-year-old Vanderbilt, Mich., man was held atthe Otsego County Jail Thursday on charges of possession of anexplosive device and speeding after police found two live pipe bombs in his car during a traffic stop.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Post at Gaylord, Mich.,initiated a traffic stop at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday for a speedingviolation on Old 27 Road near Alexander Road in Otsego County.During the stop, troopers observed an ammunition can in the backseat of the vehicle and found that the can contained two live pipebombs, one previously detonated pipe bomb and bomb makingmaterials.

It is believed that the subject was making pipe bombs andsetting them off in the woods,” said Sgt. Brian Lewis

Matthew Chaffee was taken into custody by troopers, who immediatelyshut down Old 27 Road and called the Michigan State Police BombSquad who responded to the scene and detonated the two pipe bombsat approximately 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

Chaffee was arraigned on the charges in Otsego County 87th DistrictCourt.
