the fighting began in Iraq

Posted in Unspecified

As he got closer and closer to home, Ingham wondered how his 3-year-old daughter, Jenna, would know him. He wondered how his wife would look after a year. But, more than anything, he was excited to be coming home after what he had already decided was going to be his final tour of duty.

Once the fighting began in Iraq, Ingham knew he needed to be there so he volunteered for his first deployment. His boots were on Iraqi ground in May 2003, just two months after Operation Iraqi Freedom commenced.

Not long after he came home from his first year overseas, Ingham volunteered to go to war again; he was deployed back to Iraq in 2004 for another year. When he returned home, it was not long before he called his superior officers to volunteer for yet another tour. His wish was granted. In 2006 Ingham found himself back in Iraq.

"After the third time I said, 'I will never go again unless (the National Guard unit based in Rogers) is activated because it is my hometown.' Well, then Rogers was activated and my captain called me and said, 'put your money where your mouth is,'" Ingham said.

With that, Ingham was once again off to fight in the desert with the 39th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

Even with all of the tours and after spending the bulk of the last five years in a foreign county, Ingham has no regrets.

"As a soldier, sometimes war is a necessity. As a medic, you are needed to go to war with these men to make sure they survive," Ingham said.

Throughout all of his deployments, Ingham remembers. He remembers the first time he stepped foot on Iraqi soil. He remembers the pranks he played on his fellow soldiers and the good times he shared with the Iraqi guardsmen when he taught them the words to popular country music songs.

He remembers the worst day he spent in Iraq - Feb. 14, 2005.

"We got into a firefight in the middle of a funeral and a lot of innocent people got caught in our crossfire. Everything was happening so fast. It was kind of like a Nintendo game," Ingham said. "When the shooting stopped, there were two Iraqi guardsman protecting me and they were both crying. Then a kid came over and he was crying and pointing. We looked over and saw his mother crumpled up in a pile."

The woman had been shot in the chest and a bullet graze her head. Ingham started working on her, doing everything he could to save her.

"Then we found a civilian vehicle and a civilian to take her to the hospital and that was the last time I saw her," Ingham said. The hardest part of the story is that he'll never know if the woman lived or died.

With his most recent deployment, Ingham had the opportunity to see how Iraq has changed and evolved over the course of his many deployments.

"When we first got there (during Ingham's first deployment in 2003) everything was shoot 'em up, bang, bang. You could not do anything for anyone because you did not know who the enemy was. With the last deployment, it was so much calmer. You could walk down the streets and see people giving you a thumbs up," Ingham said.

Some of Ingham's happiest moments in Iraq were during mail call when he would hear his name for care packages.

"People would send us DVDs and cookies. They would send us everything from cell phones to DVDs to DVD players. The packages always made us feel good. It is almost like they (the people sending the care packages) were right there with us," Ingham said.

"It was always great to see your name on the mail list and to come back with a dolly full of stuff. Taking back the packages to your bunk, you feel like you're a king," Ingham said.

"In my eyes, they (people sending care packages) are the real heroes. They stay here and they deal with watching the news and take care of things while we are overseas," Ingham said.

Another one of Ingham's heroes is his wife, JoAnna, he said.

Married just seven days before his first deployment, JoAnna has taken care of the couple's daughter, gone to school and work, and has kept everything running, Ingham said.

"She is my hero. She has been very supportive. She knows it is in my blood," Ingham said.

Ingham was home when Jenna was born, but shortly after he was once again deployed.

"It has been difficult. I missed a lot of birthdays and a lot of things in her life," Ingham said. "To keep up with her, I got lots of pictures and handprints and footprints. For her first Christmas, I got videos of her walking up to Santa Claus," Ingham said. On that Christmas he was at Fort Drum, N.Y., for training.

JoAnna got creative to make sure the tot would know her father.

"We put pictures of me on her crib so she would know me," Ingham said.
